Roof Calculator Online is a single-purpose tool: you enter a building footprint, an overhang and a roof pitch, and it returns the roof surface area, the number of roofing squares, a material takeoff rounded to whole packaging units, and an itemised replacement cost range adjusted for your state.
It covers gable, hip, shed, gambrel and multi-section roofs, asphalt, metal and tile coverings, and the accessory items most calculators skip — drip edge sticks, ridge cap bundles, starter, ice barrier per IRC R905.1.2, ventilation net free area per IRC R806.2, fasteners and flashing kits. Everything is printable on one page so you can carry it to a supplier or hold it beside a contractor's bid.
Why it exists
Most homeowners meet their first roofing number at the kitchen table, written by someone who is selling the roof. That is a bad moment to be doing arithmetic for the first time. Knowing that your roof is 24 squares, that a 6/12 pitch multiplies the footprint by 1.1180, and roughly what architectural asphalt runs per square in your state changes the entire conversation — you can tell a fair bid from a padded one, spot a takeoff that was measured wrong, and set a budget before anyone puts a ladder against the house.
The other reason is that most calculators on the web stop at a single number and never explain it. This one includes a "How we calculate this" panel that substitutes your own inputs into every formula, so the output can be checked rather than trusted.
How the numbers work
There is only one piece of trigonometry in a roof takeoff. Everything after it is arithmetic:
- Adjusted footprint. Twice the overhang is added to each building dimension, then the dimensions are multiplied.
- Pitch multiplier. The adjusted footprint is multiplied by the square root of 1 plus rise over 12, squared. A 4/12 roof gives 1.0541; 6/12 gives 1.1180; 12/12 gives 1.4142.
- Squares. Roof area is divided by 100. One roofing square is 100 sq ft of finished surface — the unit the whole trade prices in.
- Waste. A waste factor is applied to field shingles based on roof geometry — roughly 10% for a simple gable, 15% for a hip, up to 22% for a complex steep roof with several valleys — and about 5% to accessories, which cut far more efficiently.
- Takeoff. Squares with waste convert into whole packaging units: three bundles per square for standard asphalt, perimeter ÷ 9.5 for 10 ft drip edge sticks, ridge and hip linear feet ÷ the coverage of a cap bundle, and so on.
- Cost. Material, labour, tear-off per layer, decking replacement, dumpster and permit are itemised, then adjusted by a regional multiplier for your state.
Every one of these steps is visible in the calculator with your own numbers filled in. If a figure looks wrong, open that panel first — it is usually a mis-measured footprint or a guessed pitch, which are the two inputs that move the result most.
Where the data comes from
The geometry is fixed mathematics and does not change. The cost side is maintained separately and is dated on the page so you always know how fresh it is.
- Cost rates: 2026 US national average installed prices per square by material class, last reviewed January 2026, with per-state multipliers reflecting regional labour and material differences.
- Code references: the International Residential Code — R905.1.2 (ice barrier), R806.2 (attic ventilation), R908.3 (roof covering layer limit), R905.2.2 (asphalt shingle slope limits). Local amendments always override, and your building department is the final authority.
- Packaging and coverage: standard US trade conventions — three bundles per square for three-tab and architectural shingles, four to five for luxury lines, 10 ft drip edge sticks with a 9.5 ft usable length after laps, synthetic underlayment at 10 squares per roll.
Prices move. A range that is accurate in January drifts by autumn, and material costs have been unusually volatile in recent years. Treat the cost output as a planning band, not a quote.
How it is built
The calculator is a static web page with no back end. All of the mathematics runs in your browser in JavaScript — nothing you type is transmitted anywhere, there is no account to create, and there is no database holding your address or your roof.

Your last inputs, unit system and theme are saved in your own browser so the page reopens where you left it.

What it is not
This is a planning tool. It is not an engineering document, not a structural analysis, not a bid, and not a substitute for someone standing on your roof with a tape measure. Complicated geometry, awkward access and deck rot discovered after tear-off all move real numbers beyond what any calculator can predict from a footprint.

How we stay free
The tool is free to use, with no signup, no paywall and no "enter your email to see the result" gate. There is no lead-generation business behind it — your inputs are never sold, because they never leave your browser in the first place. If advertising is ever introduced to cover hosting, it will be disclosed here and in the privacy policy before it goes live, and it will not change how the calculations work.
