Terms & conditions

The rules for using this site. In plain terms: the calculator is free, the numbers are planning estimates rather than professional advice, and decisions you make from them remain yours.

1. Acceptance of terms

By accessing or using roofcalculatoronline.com (the "Site"), you agree to these terms and conditions and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree with any part of them, please do not use the Site.

These terms apply to every visitor. No account is required to use the calculator, so your use of the Site is itself your acceptance.

2. What the service is

The Site provides a free roofing calculator that converts a building footprint, overhang and roof pitch into roof area, roofing squares, a material takeoff and an indicative installed cost range. All calculations are performed in your browser. The Site is provided free of charge, without registration, and we may operate, modify or discontinue it at our discretion.

3. Estimates, not professional advice

This is the most important section on the page.

The output of the calculator is a planning estimate for budgeting and material ordering. It is not an engineering document, a structural assessment, a construction bid, an insurance settlement figure, or a substitute for a site inspection by a licensed professional.

Nothing on the Site constitutes engineering, architectural, legal, insurance or financial advice, and no professional relationship is created by your use of it. Before committing money to a roofing project you should obtain written quotes from licensed, insured contractors and, where structure or code compliance is in question, consult a qualified engineer or your local building department.

4. Accuracy and code references

We take the mathematics seriously, publish the formulas the calculator uses, and date the cost data so you can judge how current it is. Even so:

  • Results depend entirely on your inputs. A mis-measured footprint or a guessed pitch will produce a confident but wrong answer.
  • Cost figures are indicative ranges built from national averages adjusted by state. Real quotes vary with access, roof complexity, season, supply prices, discovered deck damage and local labour markets.
  • Code references are informational. References to the International Residential Code (including R905.1.2, R806.2, R908.3 and R905.2.2) describe the model code. Jurisdictions adopt different editions and local amendments, and your building department is the final authority on every code question.
  • Material coverage and packaging follow common US trade conventions; always check the manufacturer's own coverage figures for the specific product you buy.

We may correct, update or change any figure, rate or formula at any time without notice.

5. Your responsibilities

You are responsible for verifying every number before acting on it — in particular before ordering material, signing a contract or filing a claim. You are responsible for your own safety: do not climb on a roof to take a measurement if you are not equipped and competent to do so; the calculator is designed so the footprint can be measured from the ground and the pitch from inside the attic for exactly this reason. You are also responsible for obtaining any permits your jurisdiction requires.

6. Acceptable use

You may use the Site for personal or commercial estimating purposes, including as part of your own work as a contractor or estimator. You may not:

  • copy, scrape, mirror or republish the Site, its cost tables or its calculation logic as a competing product or dataset;
  • use automated means to place unreasonable load on the Site, or attempt to disrupt, probe or gain unauthorised access to it or its infrastructure;
  • remove or obscure any proprietary notice, or present the Site's output as certified, professionally verified or endorsed by us;
  • use the Site in any way that is unlawful, fraudulent, or intended to mislead a consumer, insurer or public authority.

7. Intellectual property

The Site's design, text, illustrations, code and the particular arrangement of its calculation logic and cost tables are owned by us and protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. The underlying mathematics of roof geometry, and the code provisions cited, are of course not ours and remain freely usable.

You may print, download and share results generated from your own inputs, including with clients and suppliers, without restriction. You may quote short extracts from the Site with attribution and a link. Any broader reuse requires written permission — write to legal@roofcalculatoronline.com.

8. No warranty

The Site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any result, figure or code reference is accurate, complete or suitable for your project.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or for over-ordering or under-ordering material, cost overruns, project delays, rejected work, denied insurance claims or contractual disputes, arising out of or connected with your use of the Site — whether based in contract, tort, negligence, strict liability or otherwise, and even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the Site is limited to one hundred US dollars (US$100). You acknowledge that the Site is provided free of charge and that this allocation of risk is a reasonable basis on which it is made available.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of liability for death, personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and where such a rule applies our liability is limited to the minimum extent permitted by that law.

10. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Site's operator against any claim, loss, liability, cost or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your breach of these terms, your misuse of the Site, or your presentation of its output to a third party as a professional estimate, certified measurement or bid.

11. Third-party links

The Site may link to third-party resources such as code bodies, manufacturers or suppliers. Those sites are not under our control, we do not endorse them, and we are not responsible for their content, products or privacy practices. Follow such links at your own discretion and read the terms and privacy policy that apply there.

12. Availability and changes to these terms

We may change, suspend or withdraw the Site or any feature of it at any time, and we may revise these terms. The current version always appears on this page with its "last updated" date. Material changes take effect when posted, and your continued use of the Site afterwards means you accept the revised terms. If you do not accept them, stop using the Site.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and of the state in which the Site's operator is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising from these terms or your use of the Site is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in that state, and you consent to that venue. If you are a consumer resident in another jurisdiction, this does not deprive you of the protection of any mandatory law of your place of residence.

14. General terms

  • Severability. If any provision is held unenforceable, it is modified to the minimum extent necessary and the remaining provisions stay in full effect.
  • No waiver. A failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it.
  • Entire agreement. These terms and the privacy policy are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Site.
  • Assignment. We may assign these terms in connection with a transfer of the Site; you may not assign them without our consent.
  • Survival. The sections on intellectual property, warranty, liability, indemnity and governing law survive any termination of your use of the Site.

15. Contact
