The short version
We do not ask for your name, address or email to use the calculator. Your roof dimensions never leave your device. We set no advertising or analytics cookies. The only personal data that exists is what our hosting provider records automatically to serve the page, and whatever you choose to put in an email to us.
The sections below are the full detail. This policy applies to roofcalculatoronline.com and every page on it.
Who we are
Roof Calculator Online ("we", "us") operates this website and is the data controller for the limited personal data described here. You can reach us at privacy@roofcalculatoronline.com or through the contact page.
What we collect
Information you give us
Only if you email us. In that case we hold your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever is in your message — for as long as it takes to answer you and keep a record of the correction or request, and no longer than three years after the last message in the thread.
Information from using the calculator
None reaches us. The roof dimensions, pitch, material, state and every other input you enter are processed by JavaScript running on your own device. There is no form submission, no API call and no logging endpoint behind the calculator. If you disconnect from the internet after the page loads, it still works — which is the simplest demonstration that nothing is being sent.
Information collected automatically
Our hosting provider records standard technical request data when your browser asks for a page. See hosting and server logs below.
Data stored in your browser
To make the tool usable across visits, a small amount of data is saved in your browser's localStorage under the key roofcalc_v1. This is storage on your own device — it is readable only by this site, is never transmitted to us, and is not a cookie.
- Your most recent calculator inputs, so the page reopens where you left off.
- Your unit preference (feet or metres).
- Your theme preference (dark or light).
Nothing in that record identifies you. It contains measurements and preferences, not names, addresses or contact details — and you can delete it at any time, as described under how to clear your data. If your browser blocks storage (private mode, for example), the calculator falls back to holding the values in memory for the session and simply forgets them when you close the tab.
Share links and URLs
The Share button builds a link that encodes your inputs in the URL's query string, so that opening it restores the same calculation. Two things follow from that, and they are worth knowing:
- The dimensions travel inside the link itself. We do not create or store a record of it on any server.
- Anyone you send the link to can see those inputs, and any service you paste it into may retain it in the ordinary way. Only share a link with people you would happily tell your roof measurements.
The same encoding is written into your address bar as you work, which is what makes browser reload and bookmarking restore your figures.
Hosting and server logs
Like every website, ours is served by a hosting provider that records technical information about each request in order to deliver pages, keep the service running and defend against abuse. That typically includes your IP address, the time of the request, the page requested, the referring page and your browser's user-agent string.
These logs are held by the hosting provider under their own retention schedule — usually a short rolling window measured in days or weeks — and are used only for operating and securing the site. We do not use them to build a profile of you, and we do not combine them with anything else.
Third parties
The page loads no third-party scripts, fonts, frames or trackers. Everything it needs — the stylesheet, the JavaScript, the icons — is served from this domain, so no other company sees your visit at all.
We do not sell, rent or share personal information, and there is no lead-generation arrangement with roofing contractors, suppliers or marketing networks behind this site.
If advertising or analytics is ever introduced to cover hosting costs, this section will be updated before it goes live, naming the provider, what it collects and how to opt out.
Legal basis for processing
For visitors in the UK and the European Economic Area, our lawful bases under the UK GDPR and GDPR are:
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) for server logs — necessary to deliver, secure and maintain the website.
- Legitimate interests for handling correspondence — to answer the question you asked us.
- Storage on your device for preferences is strictly necessary to provide the functionality you requested, so it does not require separate consent under the ePrivacy rules.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its processing, receive a portable copy, and complain to your data protection authority. Because the only personal data we hold is email correspondence, in practice a request usually amounts to a copy or deletion of that thread.
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, California residents have rights to know, delete, correct and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CPRA, and we do not process sensitive personal information for inferring characteristics. Exercising any of these rights will never result in worse service.
We honour Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals by default, in the sense that there is no tracking to turn off in the first place.
To exercise a right, email privacy@roofcalculatoronline.com. We will reply within 30 days, or sooner where the law requires it, and we may need to ask for enough information to locate your correspondence.
How to clear your data
Everything the calculator remembers is on your own device, so you control it directly:
- Use the calculator's Reset control to clear the current inputs.
- Clear site data for this domain in your browser settings — in Chrome and Edge, Settings → Privacy → Third-party cookies → See all site data, then remove
roofcalculatoronline.com. In Firefox, Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data. In Safari, Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data. - Or simply browse in a private window, where nothing persists after you close it.
Deleting site data removes the saved inputs and preferences permanently. There is nothing for us to delete on our side, because we never received it.
Children's privacy
This site is a construction planning tool intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, contact us and we will delete it.
Security and international transfers
The site is served over HTTPS, so the connection between your browser and the server is encrypted. Because the calculator holds no user database, there is no store of roof measurements or customer records that could be breached. Email correspondence is held in a standard commercial email service protected by access controls.
Our hosting and email providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where personal data is transferred out of the UK or EEA, it is done under appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the revised version is posted here with a new "last updated" date at the top of the page. Material changes — particularly the introduction of any third-party analytics or advertising — will be described plainly rather than buried in a redraft. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the current version.
